Durham police are investigating a crash that killed a person on Interstate 885 late Monday night.
Just before 11:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a crash on the northbound side of the interstate between the exits to Holloway Street and Cheek Road.

They found a pedestrian who was hit by the driver of a Nissan Versa. Police said the person was hit in the middle lane of the highway, then "run over by at least two additional vehicles that did not remain at the scene."
The northbound side of I-885 was closed for hours as police investigated. Traffic was flowing again around 4:30 a.m.
The WRAL Breaking News Tracker arrived to find a large emergency response that shut down all northbound lanes of the highway as investigators worked to determine what happened.
It's unclear whether the driver remained on scene or will face any charges. The person who died has not been identified by police as of Tuesday afternoon.
The crash remains under investigation.
