The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles on Friday said bed bugs will shut down one of its Durham offices for weeks.
According to NCDMV, the office located on South Miami Boulevard will be closed until Monday, July 13. A spokesperson for the DMV said bed bugs were discovered in the office, adding that customer brought them in on Wednesday and another customer told employees at the DMV.

The spokesperson said the DMV took the chair and surrounding chairs in the row outside and called a pest control company to test for bed bugs. Those tests came back positive the next day and the office closed around 2 p.m. on Thursday.
WRAL has reached out to the Department of Transportation asking why the office remained open on Wednesday and Thursday, pending the testing or results.
On Friday, WRAL crews spotted the row of chairs still in front of the South Miami Boulevard office.
A man, who went by the name Omar, was dropped off at the East Durham DMV to get an ID. He found a sign on the door and had to call a ride home.
“I came here by Lyft as well- I don’t have a car either. So I just wasted probably like $30 on this," he said.
NCDMV said customers with appointments at the office are being called and offered a chance to reschedule their appointment at the same date, time and location of their choice.
It's unclear if the people who visited the DMV on Wednesday or Thursday were contacted and notified of the potential exposure.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation recommended people visit three nearby offices in the coming weeks.
The following offices near the closed facility offer driver's license services Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:
- Durham: 3825 South Roxboro Street, Suite 119 (Hope Valley Commons)
- Carrboro: 100 N.C. Highway 54, Suite 104JJ (Carrboro Plaza)
- Hillsborough: 1201 U.S. Highway 70 West
Examiners from the Durham DMV office will temporarily reassigned to other offices to help accommodate more customers during the closure.
